How Much Does a Website Cost in NZ?

See what a website costs in New Zealand in 2026, what affects the price, ongoing expenses, and what to check before choosing a provider.

Website prices in New Zealand range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands. The gap is real, and it can make comparing quotes confusing.

Published prices for a small business website commonly run from about $1,500 to $15,000, while our websites start from $250 plus GST. This guide explains what affects website cost in NZ, what you may pay after the build, and how to tell whether a quote offers fair value.

Website costs in NZ: indicative market ranges

Prices vary considerably between providers, so treat these as general market ranges rather than quotes. Many providers quote plus GST, which is 15%, so check whether GST is included before comparing prices.

Type of websiteIndicative published range in NZWho it may suit
DIY website builderAbout $20 to $50 a month, plus your timeHobbies, side projects, or testing an idea
Simple or one-page websiteAbout $650 to $2,000New businesses or focused campaign pages
Template-based business websiteAbout $1,500 to $4,500Local services with a clear offer
Custom business websiteAbout $4,000 to $15,000Businesses that rely on their website for enquiries
E-commerce websiteAbout $5,000 to $15,000, with large stores costing moreBusinesses selling products online

These ranges are rounded from pricing and guidance published by several New Zealand providers, including Hyper Digital, MOGGED, Igloo, and ArrowSite. We reviewed these sources in October 2026. Their figures and inclusions differ, which is why the ranges are broad.

Many straightforward brochure websites for trades, restaurants, and local services do not require a large-agency budget. A website with genuine complexity, such as a large store, custom integrations, or extensive content, can cost more for good reasons.

Why website prices vary so much

Different providers have different delivery models, team sizes, and levels of involvement. A quote may cover research, copywriting, design, development, project management, testing, accessibility, training, and ongoing support. Those differences affect the price, which is why it is important to compare what is included rather than the total alone.

A high price does not automatically guarantee a strong result, just as a low price does not automatically mean poor work. The important question is whether the website is appropriate for the business and whether the provider can explain what they are delivering.

The following factors commonly increase the cost:

  • E-commerce and the number of products
  • Custom booking or scheduling workflows
  • Connections with CRM, payment, inventory, or other business systems
  • Custom features and development
  • Copywriting, photography, and large amounts of content
  • Strategy, research, accessibility, and testing requirements
  • Ongoing maintenance and support

How much should a website cost?

A fair price is one that matches what the website needs to do. A simple site that explains your services and gives customers a clear way to contact you should be priced differently from an online store or a platform with custom functionality.

Before accepting a quote, ask what is included. Check:

  • How many pages or page types are included?
  • Who supplies or writes the content?
  • Are photography and image preparation included?
  • Does the quote include booking, e-commerce, or integrations?
  • Who owns the domain, website, content, and customer data?
  • What are the hosting and maintenance costs?
  • What happens when you need changes?
  • How long will the project take?

A written quote that answers those questions is easier to assess than a price on its own.

What makes a good business website?

A good website communicates what customers need to know, loads quickly, works properly on mobile devices, and makes the next step obvious. Its links and forms should work, and it should include a suitable booking option if the business needs one.

It also needs sound foundations for analytics and SEO. A visually impressive website is not much help if search engines cannot understand it or the business cannot measure whether it generates enquiries.

There is no useful single average price because a focused one-page site and a custom e-commerce build are very different projects. Work out what the website needs to achieve first, then compare quotes for the same scope.

Costs that come after the build

The initial build is not always the entire cost. Depending on the project, you may also need to budget for the following.

Domain name

The annual wholesale fee for a .nz domain is $22 plus GST, according to the .nz Rules. Registrars add their own margin, and prices for other domain extensions vary.

Keep the domain registered in your name or business name, retain access to the account, and make sure renewal notices reach you.

Photography and content

Original photographs of your business usually create more trust than generic stock imagery. We prefer clients to supply genuine photographs where possible, and we help plan what content the website needs.

Copywriting, professional photography, illustration, video, and extensive product entry may be separate costs, depending on the quote.

Hosting and maintenance

Published hosting and care plans commonly range from roughly $25 to $120 a month, although the inclusions vary widely. A basic hosting plan is not the same as a managed service that includes updates, content changes, backups, and support.

We can host and maintain websites we build, or work with hosting controlled by the client. The platform cost, maintenance scope, and ownership arrangements are agreed before the project begins.

What about Wix and Squarespace?

Wix and Squarespace can be reasonable ways to launch a simple website yourself. Their plans commonly start within the $20 to $50 monthly range, depending on the billing term, currency, features, and current pricing. Domains, email, apps, e-commerce features, and professional help may add to the total.

The main cost of a DIY website is often your time. You still need to plan the structure, write the content, prepare images, configure forms, set up tracking, cover accessibility basics, and make sure the technical SEO is sound.

We choose the platform according to the project. That may mean custom code, WordPress, WooCommerce, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, or another suitable option. We explain the platform costs and trade-offs before work starts.

E-commerce website costs in NZ

E-commerce prices vary according to the number of products, payment and shipping rules, product variations, inventory requirements, content migration, integrations, and the amount of custom design required.

A small catalogue with straightforward checkout requirements is usually simpler than a large store with complex shipping, inventory, or accounting connections. WooCommerce, Shopify, and custom development can all be appropriate in different situations.

Tell the provider how many products you have, how orders are fulfilled, which payment methods you need, and what other systems the store must connect to. That information will produce a much more useful quote.

Can you build a website with AI?

AI tools can produce a basic website quickly. What they cannot decide for you is the right offer, structure, market position, content strategy, tracking setup, or long-term maintenance plan.

We often see business owners build a site themselves and later find that it is not generating enquiries. That does not mean AI website builders are bad. It means a website is only one part of the wider marketing system. Our guide to building a business website with AI explains when the DIY approach makes sense and where experience still matters.
